Greek student housing allowance 2025-2026: amounts and conditions

A yearly payment for families who pay rent because their child studies in another town.

Checked by Radif Partners · Editorial policy

A family with one child and €28,000 of income, whose student shares a rented flat with another student in Athens, receives a student housing allowance of €2,000 for the 2025-2026 academic year. The allowance under article 10 of Law 3220/2004 is €1,500 for studies in Attica or Thessaloniki and €2,000 for a university anywhere else, rising to €2,000 and €2,500 when the student shares the flat with another student. Family income for 2025 must not exceed €30,000, plus €3,000 for each dependent child after the first, so €33,000 for a family with two children. The student needs a lease of at least 6 months in a town other than the family home, must have passed half of last year’s courses, and the family’s homes must not exceed 200 m² in total. Each university pays the allowance once funds arrive from the Ministry of Education. The calculator gives the amount for your situation.

Attica counts as one town, except its islands and areas more than 40 km away, and so does the Thessaloniki urban area: a family living in one Athens suburb cannot claim for a flat in another. A semester in a university residence is allowed; a whole year is not.

The income is the family’s total for the tax year before the academic year, 2025 for 2025-2026. For families on the edge, the €3,000 per additional child matters: three children raise the ceiling to €36,000.

Two allowances, one flat

The student housing allowance can be combined with the rent refund paid by AADE each November, which returns one twelfth of the year’s rent on a student flat up to €800, with an income test only. On a typical student rent, together they cover several months of rent a year.

Frequently asked questions

Can EU students studying in Greece get the student housing allowance?

The student must be a Greek or EU citizen with a Greek tax number and be a Greek tax resident, and the claim normally goes through the parent who declares the student as a dependant. A student who is over 25, files their own return, is an orphan or whose parents live abroad can claim personally. Students from outside the EU are not covered by this allowance.

How much is the Greek student housing allowance for 2025-2026?

€1,500 a year for a student at a university in Attica or Thessaloniki, €2,000 anywhere else, and €2,000 or €2,500 respectively when the student shares the rented flat with another student. There is no separate supplement for islands; what matters is where the institution is.

When is the student housing allowance paid?

Each university pays it once the Ministry of Education has transferred the funds, so the date varies by institution. For 2025-2026 the applications ran from 30 June to 31 July 2026 and reopened from 17 to 22 September; Patras, for example, received its full allocation for processed claims on 1 October 2026.
