Greek road tax by engine size: older cars and motorcycles in 2026

Cars first registered up to 31 October 2010, and every motorcycle whatever its age, pay Greek road tax on engine capacity alone.

Greek road tax by engine size applies in 2026 to two groups: passenger cars first registered in the EU up to 31 October 2010, and all two- and three-wheeled motorcycles, whenever they were registered. Article 20 of Law 2948/2001 sets three tables, one for first registration up to 2000, one for 2001 to 2005 and one from 2006, each with the same eleven engine bands. Each band carries a fixed amount, from €22 for engines up to 300 cc to €1,380 above 4,000 cc. Up to 1,357 cc all three tables charge the same; above that, the more recent the registration, the higher the tax. A 1.6-litre car from 2008 owes €280. Fuel, power and emissions are ignored. The sharpest step is at 1,928 cc, where the bill more than doubles, and mopeds pay a flat €12. Enter the engine capacity from field P.1 of your registration certificate below to see all three tables at once.

The oldest table covers cars that received their first licence in an EU or EEA state up to the end of 2000. It is the cheapest for mid-sized and large engines: a 1,598 cc car from that era owes €250, a three-litre €820.

Same limits, with amounts that part company from band E (1,358-1,548 cc) upwards. The gap with the previous table is modest, €15 in band E and €30 in the top band, but it recurs every year.

The law heads this table “from 2006 onwards”, yet for passenger cars it stops on 31 October 2010, since CO₂ takes over the next day. It remains in use for motorcycles registered from 2006 to the present and for a handful of special cases covered below. In the top band, a car from this period pays €150 more a year than one from 2000.

Common engines across the three tables

1,997 cc€615€630€690
2,497 cc€820€840€920
2,998 cc€820€840€920

Two limits stand out in the used-car market. At 1,357 cc the third table jumps from €135 to €255. At 1,928 cc it goes from €320 to €690, so one cubic centimetre adds €370 a year. If you are choosing between a 1.9 and a 2.0 of the same model, that difference comes back every year for as long as you own the car.

Engine capacity appears in field P.1 of the registration certificate and the date of first registration in field B. For an imported used car, the date that picks the table is the first registration in any EU or EEA state, not the date it was registered in Greece.

Motorcycles: always by engine size

For two- and three-wheeled motorcycles article 20 never switched systems: they pay by engine capacity regardless of their date of first registration. A bike registered in 2026 uses the third table, exactly like a car from 2008. Since most bikes have small or mid-sized engines, the amounts are low, and many expats who commute on a scooter pay €22 a year. Mopeds sit outside the tables at a flat €12. As with cars, the bike’s road tax is owed for the whole year.

Newer vehicles that still pay by engine size

Engine-size tables are not only for old cars. Article 20 sends several categories of newer vehicles to them. Used cars whose first year on the international market was before 1 January 2002 pay by engine size whenever they entered the EU, because CO₂ measurement was not compulsory for them. Motorhomes and armoured passenger cars are exempt from CO₂ measurement and pay by engine size too. Cars bought from the State or its surplus agency and put into private use are taxed on the third table. Vehicles approved as one-off builds from used parts have their own table, with the amounts of the first. Private cars under temporary customs admission are also taxed on engine size alone, under rules our calculator does not cover.

Private car road tax is not split by month: only taking the car off the road for the whole year, declared before 1 January, removes it.

The old car question: keep, sell or take off the road?

For a twenty-year-old car, road tax can be the largest fixed cost of the year. A two-litre from 2004 owes €630, a three-litre from 2009 €920. If the car will not move at all next year, akinisia declared on gov.gr before 1 January removes that year’s tax, provided the plates come off and the car stays at the declared address; our guide to road tax per month explains what happens if you change your mind mid-year. To compare an old car with a newer one, the CO₂ band guide and the road tax calculator show what each would pay, and the salary calculator helps fit the amount into a monthly budget.

Frequently asked questions

I am shipping my 2005 Land Cruiser to Greece. How much road tax will it pay?

It depends only on the engine and the first EU registration date. If the car was first registered in an EU country in 2005, the second engine table applies: a 2,982 cc engine falls in the 2,358-3,000 band and owes €840 a year. A 4,164 cc version would owe €1,260. Fuel and CO₂ play no part for a car of that age.

Do scooters and motorbikes in Greece pay road tax by CO₂ like new cars?

No. Two- and three-wheeled motorcycles always pay by engine size, whatever their registration date. A bike registered today uses the table for vehicles registered from 2006: a 125 cc scooter owes €22 a year and a 1,200 cc tourer €135. Mopeds are simpler still, with a flat €12.

Why does a 1.4-litre car pay almost twice as much as a 1.3?

Because 1,357 cc is a band limit. On the table for cars first registered from 2006 to October 2010, an engine of 1,357 cc owes €135, and one of 1,358 cc owes €255. The engine capacity printed in field P.1 of the registration certificate decides the band, to the cubic centimetre.

I bought a 2017 car at a Greek state auction. Why is its road tax based on engine size?

Article 20 sets that rule for passenger cars sold by the State or its surplus-goods agency (ODDY) and put on the road for private use: their road tax is worked out on engine size alone, using the third table. A 1,598 cc car bought that way owes €280 a year, whatever CO₂ figure its registration certificate shows.
