Road tax in Greece 2026: what your car owes

Greek road tax, the teli kykloforias, is an annual charge set by engine size for cars first registered up to 31 October 2010 and by CO₂ emissions for everything newer.

Checked by Radif Partners · Editorial policy

Greek road tax for 2026 depends first on when your car was registered for the first time anywhere in the EU. Cars registered up to 31 October 2010 pay a flat amount by engine size, from €22 for the smallest to €1,380 above 4,000 cc, with slightly higher amounts the more recent the registration. Cars registered from 1 November 2010 to the end of 2020 pay per gram of CO₂ measured on the old NEDC cycle, and cars registered since 2021 per gram on the WLTP cycle. Every gram is charged at the rate of the band the car falls in, so a 2026 hatchback emitting 128 g/km owes €81.92, while anything up to 122 g/km (WLTP) or 90 g/km (NEDC) pays nothing. Battery-electric and hydrogen cars are exempt. The tax is due for the whole year and cannot be split by month: the only way out is to take the car off the road for the entire year, declared before 1 January. Article 20 of Law 2948/2001 sets three engine-size tables, shown side by side here. The bands are identical in all three and up to 1,357 cc so are the amounts; above that, the later the first registration, the more the car pays. Each band carries a fixed sum, so a 1,997 cc car from 2009 owes €690 whatever its fuel, power or emissions. The steepest step sits at 1,928 cc, where the bill for a car from 2006 to October 2010 more than doubles, from €320 to €690. Our engine-size guide covers older cars and motorcycles in more depth.

Unlike a progressive income tax, the rate here is not applied slice by slice. Once a car crosses into a band, the band’s rate applies to every gram it emits. That creates cliffs: an estate on the NEDC table at 140 g/km owes €168.00, and the same model at 141 g/km owes €260.85. The two tables cannot be compared gram for gram, since they rest on different test procedures, which is why the WLTP table has its own thresholds and lower rates. The CO₂ band guide lists every threshold worth knowing before you choose a trim level.

Reading your registration certificate

The Greek adeia kykloforias follows the EU model of Directive 1999/37/EC, so the fields carry the same codes as in the rest of the Union. Field B is the date of first registration, P.1 the engine capacity in cubic centimetres and V.7 the CO₂ figure in grams per kilometre. Those three numbers are everything the calculator needs.

If you brought a used car from another EU country, the date that counts is the first registration in any EU or EEA state, not the day it received Greek plates. A car first registered in Belgium in 2018 and re-registered in Athens in 2026 pays on the NEDC table. A car deregistered and later registered again keeps the date of its first licence before deregistration. And a used car whose first year on the international market was before 1 January 2002 always pays on engine size, whatever its date of entry into the EU.

The CO₂ value on the licence counts only if it matches the certificate of conformity, or the document lodged with customs for the registration tax. If they differ, the certificate wins. When your licence shows a figure one or two grams above a threshold, it is worth checking the certificate too.

Four cars, worked through

A 2026 petrol hatchback at 128 g/km WLTP falls in the 123-139 band at €0.64 a gram: 128 × €0.64 = €81.92 a year.

A 2017 diesel estate at 141 g/km NEDC pays €260.85, against €168.00 for the version rated at 140 g/km. When buying used, the exact version matters more than the model name.

A 2009 saloon with a 1,997 cc engine pays €690, a flat amount from the third engine table.

A small hybrid from 2023 rated at 105 g/km pays €0.00, simply because it sits below the WLTP zero band, not because of any hybrid exemption.

Electric cars, motorcycles, caravans and mopeds

Battery-electric and hydrogen cars pay no road tax: they show zero grams of CO₂, which gives zero on any table, and article 20 also names them as exempt. Our page on electric cars and road tax works out the saving over the years you keep the car.

Motorcycles and three-wheelers always pay by engine size, even when registered after 2010, on the table matching their year of first registration. Private caravans and trailers pay a flat €140, and mopeds €12.

Taking the car off the road

Paragraph 2a of article 20 makes the tax on private cars, motorcycles and caravans indivisible: it is owed for the whole year, however few months the vehicle was driven. The only exception is a car declared off the road, in Greek akinisia, for the entire year. The declaration is made online on gov.gr and must be filed before the year begins; one filed in January or later does not remove that year’s tax. You then take the plates off, keep them, and leave the car where you declared it.

The rules are enforced. A car under akinisia that is spotted driving, or parked somewhere other than the declared address, loses its status at once and the owner faces, on top of the tax, an administrative fine of ten thousand euros; a repeat within five years triples the fine and costs the owner their driving licence for three years. To put the car back on the road you must first pay the road tax for that year. For people who leave Greece every winter, that is the trade-off to weigh, and the road tax per month guide explains why paying only for the months you drive is not an option.

What this calculator leaves out

It covers private passenger cars. Lorries, buses, taxis and cars under temporary admission follow other tables or rules in the same article and are not included. Nor do we compute late-payment penalties: we could not confirm the current amounts from a source we were able to check, so we give no figure rather than a guess. The payment deadline is announced each year by the Greek tax authority, AADE. Every table on this page is generated from the 2026 parameters used by the rest of the site, including the Greek salary calculator and the ENFIA property tax calculator, so a change in the law changes them all at once.

Frequently asked questions

Does a diesel car pay more road tax in Greece than a petrol one?

No. Greek road tax ignores the fuel. A car first registered up to October 2010 pays by engine size alone, and a newer one by grams of CO₂ alone. Since a diesel often emits less CO₂ than a petrol car of similar power, it can even pay less: at 150 g/km on the WLTP cycle the bill is €105.00 for either fuel.

My partner and I own the car jointly. Who does the tax office chase for the road tax?

Either of you, for the full amount. Paragraph 2c of article 20 makes all co-owners jointly and severally liable for the road tax and for any fine. The tax administration can claim the whole €81.92 of a 128 g/km car from one of you, and how you split it afterwards is a private matter between the owners.

Is a self-charging hybrid exempt from Greek road tax?

Not as such. Article 20 exempts battery-electric and hydrogen cars, and mentions hybrids only for cars bought at public auctions from the State. An ordinary hybrid registered after October 2010 pays on the CO₂ printed on its licence like any other car. Many small hybrids stay under the zero band of 122 g/km (WLTP), so they pay nothing: at 105 g/km the bill is €0.00.

Which line of the Greek registration certificate gives the CO₂ figure?

Field V.7, in grams per kilometre. Field B is the date of first registration and P.1 the engine size in cubic centimetres. These codes are the same on every EU registration certificate, so a car imported from Germany or Italy shows them in the same place. The tax office uses the V.7 value only if it matches the certificate of conformity filed at customs.

Why does a 2-litre car from 2009 pay less than a new SUV?

Because pre-November 2010 cars pay a flat amount by engine band, while newer cars pay per gram of CO₂. A 1,997 cc car first registered in 2009 owes €690. A 2024 SUV emitting 225 g/km on the WLTP cycle pays €2.20 on every gram, which comes to €495.00.
